Sandia Group Announcement
Talco Fire Systems

July 2008

Sandia Group, Inc., a division of Hugh M. Cunningham, Inc., is pleased to announce the addition of Talco Fire Systems to our quality line of products exclusively represented in New Mexico and El Paso, TX.

The products offered by Talco Fire Systems are your answer for NFPA-13D and 13R compact systems. The Heart of any 13D pump system is the controller and that why you will never see a simple pressure switch on one of our premium Residential Fire Pump Systems, People at Talco understands this. Lives depend on it.

A Pressure Switch Alone Is Not Enough

Commercial pressure switches applied to domestic water systems are always used in conjunction with hydro pneumatic pressure tanks that protect the switch and pump motor from the damaging effects of rapid cycling, the number one cause of system failure. The pressure tank provides draw down capacity so the pump always runs for one to two minutes. This allows dissipation of the excessive heat generated when the motor starts.
Equally as important, it keeps the pressure switch from chattering, which can destroy its contacts in a matter of minutes as motor starting current arcs across them repeatedly.

In the absence of a pressure tank, a “minimum run timer” must be used to guarantee that the pump does not rapidly turn on and off repeatedly. Since these timers are not rated for motor current it is necessary to use a properly sized motor contactor, controlled by the pressure switch and timer. Unless these measures are taken the pump will generally start and stop several times a second during the low flow situations that comprise the large majority of real life events in residential fire protection.

TALCO 13R Compact – Residential Fire Pump Systems

Talco 13R Compact package fire pump systems are specifically designed for NFPA-13R applications. Structures that fall under 13R and need a fire pump often present a significant problem: The fire pump must be fully listed and installed per NFPA-20. The expense and long lead times can provide great hardship when trying to complete a small project such as a nursing home or a four-plex. Talco has developed the 13R-C packages to provide a reliable alternative. To reduce lead times and expense Talco fits these systems with an industrial grade cast iron bronze fitted pumps that carry UL788 & CSA 108 listings. These carefully selected pumps meet the stringent performance requirements of NFPA 20, are individually tested and supplied with a certified copy of the test results. Talco’s fire pump controller, pressure sensing lines, pipe, valves, and fittings are all designed and assembled per the requirements of NFPA 20 to ensure fail-safe operation.
Please confirm with your AHJ or Code official as to whether this may be an acceptable alternative for your small project.
